Masks are versatile. I love to use them as templates with patterned paper or cardstock!! Try it! It’s so much fun. You can find some more ideas here!!
All leaves are made with a mask-template and arranged around the photo. I’ve also distressed the edges with a distressing-tool and black ink!!

It’s so great that your share this technique with us as the layout is absolutely gorgeous! I do have to use my distress ink and Stazon more often. (I only don’t like the smell of the Stazon ;)…) and I definately need a distressing-tool!
